This market report focuses on catches and harvests of live eel and Japanese eel in the Far East. We deal with aspects such as catches, prices and imports.
Japan
Eels (Anguilla anguilla and Anguilla japonica)
Prices
At Japanese Customs, the average price of live eels in August was JPY 4,000/kg, up 3% on that of the previous month and up 29% on that of August 2012. In the first eight months, the price averaged JPY 3,683, down 1% on that of the same period in 2012.

During the same month, the processed eels reached an average price at Customs of JPY 2,710/kg, similar to that of the previous month and down 11% on that of August 2012. During the period they averaged JPY 2,969, down 9% on those of 2012.

Markets
Imports of live eels for consumption during the analysed month totaled 540 tonnes and JPY 2,160 million, down 52% in volume and 50% in value compared with the previous month. Compared with the same month in 2012, there was a rise of 35% in volume and 73% in value according to the preliminary figures of the Japanese Customs.

During the eight months, imports of the product from China dropped 18% in volume and 19% in value compared with those of 2012, while those of Taiwan dropped 32% in volume and 31% in value.

Imports of processed products in the month reached 369 tonnes worth JPY 1,000 million, down 49% in volume and value on those of the previous month. Compared with August 2012 they were up 5% in volume but down 6% in value.

During the period imports of processed products from China dropped 17% in volume and 24% in value from those of 2012.
