DIA is a distribution chain which was founded in Spain in 1979 on the opening of its first store in Madrid.
Consolidated as the leader and a reference in the distribution sector, the DIA Group is a Spanish multinational which, since 2000, has been integrated within the International Carrefour Group - the first distribution group in Europe and the second worldwide with a gross turnover of 108,629 million Euros, a presence in 33 countries, and employing approximately 495,000 people (data from 31st December 2008).
At the close of 2008, the DIA Group employed 52,375 people working in the 6,252 stores that the company has located in Spain, France (under the ED banner), Portugal (under the Minipreço banner), Greece, Turkey, Argentina, Brazil and China. Of these, 4,795 are the company’s own stores, and 1,457operate as franchises, which makes DIA the fifth largest franchiser in Europe.
