The group Jeronimo Martins and Marisland-Madeira Mariculture signed a collaboration agreement to start sea bream (Sparus aurata) production in Madeira.
The deal involves the creation of a joint venture with an investment of around EUR 4 million.
The project aims to produce about 550 tonnes of sea bream per year at an early stage and reach an annual output of 1,200 tonnes, several Portuguese media reported.
This is the first aquaculture project undertaken by the group Jeronimo Martins Group, after having ventured in milk and dairy product production as well as that of beef.
Marisland-Madeira Mariculture, however, is a company based in Funchal, Madeira, which has extensive technical knowledge and experience in the aquaculture sector.
