On Friday, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo inaugurated the newly constructed Jamestown Fishing Harbour in Accra, Greater Accra Region, amidst a festive atmosphere. The project, which began five years ago, was met with great excitement by the local community, particularly residents of Ga Mashie, who visited the facility for the first time.

As the President cut the ribbon, signifying the official opening, the jubilant crowd erupted in celebration, with drumming, dancing, and excitement filling the air. Attendees explored the new harbour, eagerly touring its various sections.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by a host of distinguished figures, including local chiefs and traditional priests, such as the Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsru II, and Oboade Notse Odaifio Welentsi III, acting President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs. Also present were high-profile politicians, including First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo, Mrs. Alma Opoku Prempeh, and the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa.

Notable ministers of state attended as well, such as the Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah; Minister of the Interior, Henry Quartey; and Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, among others.

The construction of the Jamestown Fishing Harbour involved significant infrastructural upgrades, including dredging, breakwater construction, berthing facilities, navigational aids, paved roads, and electrical engineering works. It boasts a wide array of features such as administration buildings, shops, a fish market, an ice-making plant with a 60-tonne daily capacity, a 200-tonne cold storage facility, engine and ship repair workshops, and even a kindergarten. Additional facilities include a sewage treatment plant, and police and fire stations.

In his address, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the harbour's importance as a national asset, urging all stakeholders to ensure its success. “These are not just buildings,” he said, “they represent an investment in the future of this community." He also highlighted the inclusion of daycare centers to support mothers engaged in trading, allowing them to work while knowing their children are safe.

The President expressed optimism that the new harbour would transform the local fisheries sector, create jobs, and revitalize the Jamestown community.

In his remarks, the Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsru II, expressed deep gratitude to the government, stating that the modern facility had long been a dream of the people of Jamestown. The new harbour, he added, symbolized the government's commitment to improving the livelihoods of the people of Accra.

China’s Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa, reaffirmed China's commitment to enhancing bilateral relations with Ghana, noting that the Jamestown Fishing Harbour project was a clear demonstration of their collaborative efforts in boosting socio-economic development.

The project, which commenced in 2018, was a collaborative effort involving the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), CRCC Harbour and Channel Engineering Bureau Group Co. Ltd, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), with funding from the People’s Republic of China.
