From September 24 to October 17, an EU inspection team will visit Vietnam to evaluate the country’s aquaculture sector.

The delegation will focus on Vietnam's residue control program, specifically examining farmed seafood like pangasius and shrimp destined for EU markets. Their goal is to ensure compliance with EU regulations, particularly regarding the absence of harmful residues.

Nguyen Thi Bang Tam, a representative of the Department of Fisheries under Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards regardless of inspections:

“Whether inspectors are present or not, we must continue to adhere to our stringent processes throughout the entire production chain—from farm to table. This includes cultivation, harvesting, transportation, processing, and final consumption. Various agencies are involved in different stages. The Fisheries Department manages aspects like water quality, feed, chemicals, and environmental treatments, while the Animal Health Department oversees veterinary drugs, antibiotics, and disease control. From pond management to harvest, the Fisheries Department takes the lead, while the Quality Management Department handles transportation through to consumer delivery."

In the first eight months of this year, Vietnam’s fishery exports reached nearly USD 6.3 billion, a 7.6% increase over the same period last year. Of this, shrimp exports exceeded USD 2.4 billion, and pangasius exports surpassed USD 1.2 billion. Hosting the EU inspection team presents an opportunity for Vietnam to reinforce its position in global markets, demonstrating the capability of its regulatory bodies, production facilities, and companies to meet international standards.
