Santa Cruz Increases Fish Landings: Puerto Deseado Leads with 17,208 Tons of Catch

Santa Cruz has consolidated its position as the third largest fishing landing center in Argentina, surpassed only by Chubut and Buenos Aires.

As of February 11, 2025, Santa Cruz ports recorded a total of 19,235 tons of catches, representing 18.1% of the national total of 106,094 tons. Chubut leads the activity with 62,584 tons (58.9%), followed by Buenos Aires with 22,327 tons (21.04%), according to Nelson Saldivia of Revista Puerto.

Puerto Deseado: Epicenter of Squid Catch

Puerto Deseado stands out as a key point in the unloading of Illex argentinus squid. Of the 46,670 tons landed nationwide, 16,809 tons correspond to this port, ranking it second after Puerto Madryn (23,498 tons). Mar del Plata records 5,530 tons. In Santa Cruz, the total volume of landings is close to 20,000 tons, with 17,208 tons in Puerto Deseado (mainly squid) and 1,982 tons in Caleta Olivia (predominantly hubbsi hake S41).

Labor Stability and Business Confidence: Key Factors

The increase in landings is attributed to labor stability and the absence of conflicts in the ports, which has generated confidence among shipowner companies. Nelson Saldivia, of Revista Puerto, highlights that the reduction of conflicts has encouraged companies to choose the ports of Santa Cruz for their operations.

Mario Orellana, administrator of the port of Puerto Deseado, underlines the importance of this collaborative climate: "Social peace and joint work between the provincial government, companies and unions have been fundamental to guarantee the continuity of operations." In addition, he highlights the positive impact on the community, with the creation of almost 600 direct jobs and the boost to other local economic sectors.

Recovery of Trust and Port Development

Stability has allowed the recovery of trust of shipowner companies, which previously avoided the region for fear of conflicts. "We can continue advancing and providing the security that companies need to trust in Puerto Deseado, thus driving the growth of the port and the community," Orellana affirms. The administrator also highlights the positive response of the current administration to historical claims, allowing the port to operate 24 hours a day.
