Fisheries exports fall 26% in January

According to INDEC, the sector made shipments for USD 127 million, which represented a 26.7% drop compared to the same month of 2019.
    
The beginning of the year shows worrying numbers for the fishing industry that are added in the particular case of Mar del Plata to the closure of productive establishments on land, such as Arte Pesca and more recently, Chulemar.

According to INDEC data known on Friday through the report on trade, during January the sector accumulated USD 127 million for its shipments abroad. The figure represents a fall of 26.7% in relation to the same month last year.

In the context of a general contraction of Argentine foreign trade, which is around ​​0.8%, mainly due to the fall in prices, imports of fishery products also decreased by 16.7%, reaching only USD 5 million.

It is estimated that both the shrinkage of China for shrimp and other species, as well as the decline in Brazil, impacted export numbers. The Brazilian market, by case, fell 80% in the first month of the year, with the consequences that this has in Mar del Plata.

• Exports of fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates had a value of USD 127 million, indicating a negative interannual balance at 26.7%.

• Imports of fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other invertebrates worth USD 5 million were recorded, indicating a negative interannual balance of 16.7%.

• Exports of raw fish and shellfish registered a value of USD 104 million, against USD 152 million in January of the previous year, which represents a negative interannual balance of 31.6%.

• And the exports of processed fish and shellfish registered a value of USD 23 million, against USD 21 million in the same month of the previous year, so here there was a positive balance of 9.5%.
