Final Report on the Autumn Salmon Catch: Ishikari and Shiribeshi Districts

The autumn salmon fishing season in the Ishikari and Shiribeshi districts concluded on November 20th, with the Ishikari-Shiribeshi Sea Area Fisheries Adjustment Committee releasing the catch data on November 26th.

Despite a significant reduction in catch volume compared to the previous year, higher unit prices drove a notable increase in revenue.

Key Highlights of the 2024 Salmon Catch

  • Total Catch:

    • 504,581 fish (69% compared to the previous year)
    • 1,379 tons (66% compared to the previous year)
  • Total Revenue:

    • 1.575 billion yen (113% of the previous year's value)
  • Unit Prices:

    • Average price per kilogram: 1,143 yen (172% increase)
    • Average price per fish: 3,123 yen (163% increase)
  • Average Fish Weight:

    • 2.73 kg, which is 151 grams less than the previous year.

Summary

While the total number of fish caught and weight fell by over 30% compared to the previous year, increased prices per kilogram and fish compensated for the reduced catch volume, driving a 13% rise in overall revenue. Ishikari Bay recorded the largest contribution to the district totals, with over 305,000 fish caught and nearly 1 billion yen in revenue.

These preliminary figures highlight the resilience of the fishing industry in adapting to challenges through value optimization.
