A tuna vessel from the company Albacora managed to escape from a pirate skiff while fishing for tropical tuna in international waters, at about 400 miles northwest of the Seychelles.
The fishing vessel Galerna III was operating in international waters when one of the three security guards sighted a suspicious boat at a little over a mile and a half. During the flight, agents opened fire and several bursts of warning were enough to stop the attempted assault by pirates, reported SER.
This fact rekindles the alarms among the Basque fleet, which has been fishing somewhat calmly in these waters since 2012, and brings back to mind the hijacking of the Alakrana, another fishing boat belonging to Albacora, based in Bermeo, Basque Country, which took place in October 2009.
This time, the Basque fleet received good news, being informed that on Saturday afternoon a British frigate had stopped both the boat that tried boarding the fleet and the mother ship from which the pirates had left shortly before.
However, sources in the tuna freezer sector pointed out that this incident "clearly demonstrates that the pirate threat has not disappeared from Indian Ocean waters."
