The second anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and longnose anchovy (Anchoa nasus) fishing season in the northern-central zone of the Peruvian coast will start with exploratory fishing next Thursday, November 23.
The announcement was made by the head of the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE), Pedro Olaechea, who specified that the capture quota that has been assigned is 1.49 million tonnes. This limit was set according to the recommendation of Instituto del Mar de Peru (IMARPE), which carried out three operations to evaluate the status of the anchovy biomass.
"The results of these evaluations are based on the best scientific information available and are the basis for the allocation of the anchovy quota in each season. In that sense, we believe that given the conditions of the sea the quota set for the second fishing season 2017 is cautious to ensure the following seasons," said Olaechea.
For his part, Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Hector Soldi said that given the constant changes in oceanography (including a weather phenomenon known as "Coastal El Niño") PRODUCE and IMARPE will closely monitor the fishing activity.
"For the first time the Electronic Log, a tool that will allow a more effective control of the capture of juveniles for the protection of the anchovy stock, will be implemented" he said.
Fishing and aquaculture have an incidence of 0.7 per cent in the national GDP. It is expected that this second season will also contribute to boost the country's GDP in the second semester.
