The Fishing Captains' Union described the bill approved this Tuesday by the Fisheries Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, when dispatching the bill that establishes a new fractionation between the artisanal and industrial fishing sectors, as a direct attack on the stability of formal, decent and quality jobs in the Biobío Region's industrial fishing industry and fishing activity in general.
Juan Carlos González, president of the Union, reacted with annoyance to what was approved by the deputies, who, he said, legislate without common sense and disregarding the thousands of families of industrial fishing workers, dealing - if approved as is - a perhaps fatal blow to this economic sector of Biobío, worsening the instability of the area.
“There are parliamentarians who legislate with a destructive desire towards industrial fishing and do not realize what they are causing, they believe they are doing a tremendous favor to the artisanal activity, but they are selling smoke, and in reality they are killing the general fishing activity; they fail to understand that in Biobío the harmony and balance in fishing is given by the existence and projection of the industry together with the artisanal sector,” González stressed.
At the same time he criticized the indolence of some parliamentarians of the area who are not working on the project “or they see with indolence the risks that this project implies for the people of the Biobío Region; they seem oblivious to this problem, they will only remember the region in 2025 when there are elections.”
He pointed out that the Biobío Region will lose assets, and will cause irreparable damage to employment, concluding that hopefully in other legislative instances the situation will be balanced and legislation will be passed with knowledge of the reality.
