Market situation for Norwegian cod (dried, salted, stockfish, clipfish...)

Decrease in dried and salted cod (clipkfish)

• Norway exported 8,195 tonnes of clipfish worth NOK 623 million in November
• The value fell NOK 56 million, or 8 percent, compared to November last year.
• Volume fell 3 percent.
• Portugal, Brazil and Congo-Brazzaville were the largest rockfish markets in November

A total of 2,660 tonnes of clipfish cod worth NOK 362 million were exported in November. This is a volume reduction of 36 percent, or 1,500 tonnes. This is a reduction in value of 23 percent, or NOK 109 million.

Lower cod quotas

"With cod quotas and landings significantly lower this year, production may have been lower and Norwegian producers are starting to run low on cod stock," says seafood analyst Eivind Hestvik Brækkan of the Norwegian Seafood Council.

The export volume of cut cod to our largest market, Portugal, halved in November, to just 1,860 tonnes and an export value of NOK 247 million. So far this year, export volume to Portugal has fallen by 3,100 tonnes, or 15 percent, to a total of 17,900 tonnes.

Greater saithe cutting volume

For Saithe (pollachius virens), the volume increased by 1,170 tonnes, to a total of 4,950 tonnes, while the export value increased by NOK 50 million, to a total of NOK 225 million.

"Congo was the largest market for saithe in November, with an increase in volume of 12 percent, while export volume to Brazil increased by an astonishing 266 percent in November, and with this it was our second largest market. bigger for saithe in November," says Brækkan.

Biggest value increase for Brazil

Brazil had the largest increase in the value of all clipfish harvested this month, with an increase in export value of NOK 71 million, or 179 percent, compared to the same month last year.

The export volume to Brazil ended at 1,758 tons, 182 percent more than the same month last year.

"Brazil continues the positive development we have seen throughout the year. The export of haddock, cod and tusk to Brazil has increased so far this year both in volume and value", explains Eivind Hestvik Brækkan.

The total value of cuttlefish exports to Brazil during the first 11 months of the year is the highest since 2011.

Growth in volume and value of salted fish

• Norway exported 1,835 tonnes of salted fish worth 141 million Norwegian krone in November.
• The value increased NOK 41 million, or 41 percent, compared to November last year.
• This is a volume growth of 23 percent.
• Portugal, Italy and Canada were the largest salted fish markets in November

Portugal had the biggest increase in the value of salted fish this month, with an increase in export value of NOK 29 million, or 49 percent, compared to the same month last year. The export volume to Portugal ended at 986 tons, 24 percent more than the same month last year.

The main salted fish products in November were whole salted cod, salted ling fillet and whole salted haddock, with export values of NOK 102, 19 and 9 million respectively.

The largest market in Portugal

"For whole salted cod, Portugal was, as usual, the largest market, with an export volume of 900 tonnes and 84 percent of the total export volume of whole salted cod. This is an increase of 182 tonnes, or 25 percent, compared to November last year," says seafood analyst Eivind Hestvik Brækkan of the Norwegian Seafood Council.

Increase of 50 percent for the salty saithe

For salted long fillets, Italy was the largest market, with 266 tonnes and 88 percent of total exports. Salted whole saithe was mainly exported to Canada.

"In total, almost 500 tonnes of salted haddock have been exported to Portugal so far this year. This is an increase of almost 50 percent compared to last year and the highest volume since 2012," explains Brækkan.

Growth for dried fish

• Norway exported 428 tonnes of dried fish worth NOK 131 million in November.
• The value increased NOK 37 million, or 39 percent, compared to November last year.
• There is a volume growth of 5 percent.
• Italy and Croatia were the largest dried fish markets in November

Italy had the biggest increase in value this month, with an increase in export value of NOK 22 million, or 41 percent, compared to the same month last year.

The export volume to Italy ended at 231 tons, 12 percent more than the same month last year.

Greater volume to Croatia

So far this year, 1,816 tonnes of dried whole cod have been exported to Italy. This is a 5 percent increase compared to the same period last year, but is still significantly lower than two years ago. Export volume to our second largest dried fish market, Croatia, also increased by 5 percent to a total of 223 tonnes.

The United States stands out negatively, with a 39 percent decrease in exported volume, and a total export so far this year of 187 tons.
