ANFACO-CECOPESCA welcomes the effective fight that Spain is pursuing in order to eradicate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. But it argues that these actions should be steady at EU level so the European Commission should ensure that the authorities of the Member States carry out a steady and rigorous control of regulations.
According to the association, struggling against such practices should not be carried out only in terms of fishing activity, but it is also important to prevent IUU fishery resources from being indirectly traded in the EU market after having been turned into processed products.
The EU market is the first world market for sea products, with a level of consumption that is growing every year, being canned tuna one of the most popular products.
The Spanish sea products processing and canning industry, whose main product is canned tuna, supplies the Community market, which in turn is the target market for its main competitors.
ANFACO-CECOPESCA notes that, in recent years, the Community production of canned tuna is being affected by the significant increase in imports from third countries.
Therefore, it insists that it is vital for it to have a level playing field in the market for canned tuna traded in the EU market, ensuring fair competition. This would result positively in the competitiveness of the processing and canning industry in the EU, with a consequent positive impact on employment generation and sustainable development of the community sector.
