The latest statistics on shrimp landings in the Gulf of Mexico published by NOAA indicate that in May 10.3 million pounds of the crustacean were landed, 26.9 per cent below the prior fourteen-year historical average.
Nevertheless, the entity also informed that the total landed volume marked the second straight year of landings increases in the fifth month of the year compared to the prior May.
For the year, 23.6 million pounds of shrimp have been landed in the Gulf of Mexico, an amount that is 8.6 per cent below the prior fourteen-year historical average.
For the first five months of 2016, landings in Alabama (3.3 million pounds) are the highest recorded over the last fifteen years, while landings in Texas (6.9 million pounds) are the highest since 2012.
Of all the states, only Louisiana has landed less shrimp in 2016 (10.1 million pounds) than in 2015 (10.3 million pounds).
Ex-vessel pricing data for the month of May shows a sharp divergence in prices for large and small shrimp.

On the other hand, the prices for UN/15 count headless have firmed with prices of USD 9.37 per pound reported in the Northern Gulf last month, near the historic high of USD 9.45.
