Vietnamese tuna exports to Canada increased 61 per cent in August from the previous year, to USD 1.4 million, informed Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters & Producers (VASEP).
VASEP considers this surge is good news given the 10 per cent decline in Vietnamese tuna sales abroad year on year, to a total of USD 39.8 million. This decline was due to the lower demand from the main importing markets and the year-on-year drop in global tuna price.
However, the growth recorded in August in tuna sales to the Canadian market was not enough to offset the drop experienced in the previous months. Between January and August 2015, Vietnamese tuna exports to Canada generated USD 6.1 million in income, representing a 27.6 per cent drop year on year.
The North American country imports mainly dried, frozen, live, fresh tuna from Vietnam, accounting for 80 per cent of the country’s total tuna exports to the market with a value of about USD 5 million.
Tuna loins were the main product imported by Canada, with a value of USD 3.8 million.
According to statistics from the International Trade Center (ITC), Canada imports tuna from 53 suppliers in the world in which Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam are the leading ones.
Thailand is the largest tuna supplier to Canada with its market share of 84 per cent, followed by Philippines and Vietnam with the market share of 4 per cent and 2.6 per cent, respectively.
As to the other markets importing Vietnamese tuna, VASEP informed that in August, the United States imported Vietnamese tuna for USD 16 million, which is 1.6 per cent lower that last year's result. In the first eight months this year tuna exports to this market experienced an 11 per cent rise year on year, reaching USD 127.3 million.
Vietnam tuna exports to the Eropean Union were still in search of recovery. The export value from January to August reached nearly USD 69 million, representing a decline of 25 per cent year on year.
ASEAN countries, ranking third in Vietnam's top importing markets for tuna, reported 8 per cent rise to USD 23.3 million in the eight months this year.
Vietnam tuna sales to Japan during the period from January to August reached USD 14 million, while sales of frozen, live, fresh tuna amounted to USD 9 million. Canned tuna sales to the market, being quite modest at USD 4.8 million, increased by 16 per cent.
