Fisheries authorities from Spain and Portugal participated in a technical meeting with the services of the European Commission, to explain in detail the proposal of a multi-year management plan for the recovery of Iberian sardine prepared by both countries.
At the meeting, held in Brussels, the general director of Fisheries Resources of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Isabel Artime, along with his Portuguese counterpart and their respective teams were present.
This plan, which was already presented to the Commission last December, would allow the maintenance of the fishery, while ensuring a recovery of the biomass, thus avoiding the closure proposed by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).
The proposed management plan includes elements such as temporary closures for the recovery of juveniles, minimum sizes, limitations of landings, and reinforcement of controls, as well as scientific research for the evaluation and monitoring of the proposed measures.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the information provided was collected with interest and within the framework of this dialogue, the Commission requested additional information on some of the elements contained in the proposal.
The teams from Spain and Portugal agreed to hold a bilateral meeting, which will take place in Lisbon in the middle of next week, in order to finalize the requested information.
Spain and Portugal will continue working together to ensure the maintenance of this fishery at levels that guarantee its sustainability.
