More than a month has passed since the Federal Fisheries Council assigned a controversial social shrimp reserve for that Patagonian province. The Undersecretary of Fisheries of Río Negro admits that it still does not have the complete list of interested parties to request the assignment to ships.

Perhaps as a faithful example of the dynamics with which the Undersecretary of Fisheries, dependent on the Ministry of Productive Development of Río Negro, moves and manages, it is that more than a month has passed since the moment in which that province has available 3,500 tons of social shrimp quota to be fished in national waters, landed and processed in plants of that jurisdiction.

On June 27, the Federal Fisheries Council (CFP) in a controversial decision and in a divided vote resolved to grant that Patagonian province a quota of the species Pleoticus muelleri to meet social needs, given the state of 'fishing emergency' in which Río Negro has been since last year, as a result of erratic fishery management policies that decimated the resources within the San Matías Gulf.

The portfolio in charge of Jessica Ressler had not submitted until last week to the Federal Fisheries Council a formal request for the allocation of tons of shrimp to boats nominated by that province. It is not ruled out that a request of this nature will be submitted in the session tomorrow Thursday.

The official of Alberto Weretilneck admitted in statements to radio stations in San Antonio Oeste that the Government received requests for a social quota for plants, although she recognized that she still did not have the list of boats in condition to make the allocation and that they can enter the fishing zone in national waters.

In the sector, they point out that the lethargy of the Río Negro fishing authority, by missing a month of the shrimp season in the national jurisdiction, with 3,500 tons of quota, speaks of the profile of its management.

However, there were different statements from business entities questioning the creation of this particular social reserve for Río Negro, especially when it was born on the same day that the national legislators of that province contributed votes to the government of Javier Milei so that the Ley Bases and the fiscal package were approved in the National Congress.

Although the Federal Fishing Council decided that this volume of 3,500 applies exclusively for this current year, it is expected that Río Negro will not emerge from its emergency situation immediately, so it is suspected that this social quota will be requested again in the following years. One of the most questioned points is that the assignment was made without going to INIDEP for consultation, nor having been a topic of debate within the Shrimp Monitoring Commission.
