A report on the progress of an investigation concerning decaying salmon dumping into the seabed of Chiloe, and the possible resulting environmental pollution, was presented to the regional prosecutor in Los Lagos, Marcos Emilfork Konow.
With new statements taken and scientific investigations developed, which include a bioassay test, the research directed by prosecutor Pamela Salgado continues to establish the effects of the decaying salmon dumping in waters off the coast of Chiloe, and if these facts are subsumed in any criminal pattern.
Last Thursday a meeting was held in Puerto Montt and in offices of the Regional Prosecutor Department of Los Lagos with the main objective of analyzing the progress that this cause records.
"As regional prosecutor, I have assumed it as a great challenge to clearly and deeply establish whether salmon dumping produced an environmental pollution effect that is submissible as a criminal offense. This is why we have continued to develop proceedings intensively," Emilfork said at the end of the meeting.
The prosecutor explained that the meeting was called to see the progress of the investigation "not only in its lines related to scientific testing and sampling" made at the time, and the various investigations that are being carried out, "but also to determine how those decisions had been taken by the authority in this case. "
Meanwhile, prosecutor Pamela Salgado reported that while inquiries arise in the context of the red tide phenomenon recorded a few months ago in the area of Chiloe, they have focused research "on an issue that is not less important as that of dumping salmon and as regards that line on which work is being carried out. "
In the investigation, which began in March this year and was opened officially, "progress has achieved in different stages," said the prosecutor. This covers sampling on land and subsequent analysis, as well as the corresponding investigations, and also making statements that "also include salmon companies".
Most of the proceedings of this case have been made by the Environmental Crime Investigative Brigade (BIDEMA) of the PDI of Valdivia.
