ARVI warns of sharp fuel price surge and calls for urgent measures to prevent a shutdown of the fishing sector

The fleet warns that fuel prices have exceeded US$1.21 per liter in some European ports, threatening the economic viability of numerous vessels.
VIGO — The Cooperativa de Armadores de Pesca del Puerto de Vigo (ARVI) has conveyed its deep concern to the Secretariat-General for Fisheries (Secretaría General de Pesca) over the serious situation facing the fishing sector due to the sharp increase in energy and logistics costs resulting from the current geopolitical crisis in the Middle East.
.png) According to the organization, fuel prices for the fleet have increased by more than 72% in just one week, placing the sector once again at cost levels comparable to — or even higher than — those recorded during the energy crisis of 2022.
During 2025, the average fuel price stood at €0.555 per liter (approx. US$0.61), while in the first two months of 2026 it averaged €0.533 per liter (approx. US$0.59). However, the price has rapidly climbed, reaching €1.10 per liter (approx. US$1.21) in some refueling operations carried out in Ireland, and €0.991 per liter (approx. US$1.09) in the port of Vigo.
Supply problems and rising additional costs
In addition to the price surge, an additional issue has emerged related to fuel availability. Over the past weekend, supply difficulties in Ireland were recorded, forcing some vessels to carry out partial refueling, well below the volumes initially planned.
ARVI also warns that rising prices of gas and electricity will cause a significant increase in other costs associated with fishing activities, such as maritime transport, refrigerated storage at port, and the use of refrigerated containers.
These factors particularly affect distant-water and high-seas fleets operating from foreign ports or in remote fishing grounds, where logistical costs have an even greater impact on operational profitability.
A sector under regulatory and economic pressure
.png) The organization recalls that the fishing sector is already facing an especially complex context, marked by a sustained increase in operating costs and by new administrative requirements derived from European Union regulations.
Under these conditions, once again surpassing the threshold of US$1.10 per liter of fuel could make operations economically unviable for a growing number of vessels, the organization warned.
Request for urgent measures at national and European levels
In response to this situation, ARVI has requested that the Secretariat-General for Fisheries urgently promote the analysis and possible activation of extraordinary support measures at both the national and European levels.
Among the proposed measures are:

Mobilization of the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (FEMPA) to compensate for rising costs
