Subject: United States - Offer - n International Symposium on Energy Use in Fisheries
Message:
The Energy Use in Fisheries Symposium will provide a forum for commercial and
recreational fishermen, processors, engineers, boat and engine developers,
aquaculturists, fishery managers, administrators, and scientists from around the
world to meet and address both the direct and indirect effects of energy costs
related to fisheries. The symposium will allow for an open exchange of ideas
amongst a diverse group of individuals. Participants will identify unique and
innovative solutions to increasing energy costs and the impact of fisheries
production on the environment.
Event Objectives
-Increase awareness of the direct and indirect effects of global energy costs on
the seafood harvesting, production, processing, and marketing sectors.
-Share information on emerging energy technologies.
-Develop a set of alternative operational and management strategies to reduce
the carbon footprint of the fishing industry.
-Share demonstrated strategies of potential financial gains through reduced
energy use.
-Propose roles for government in reducing the carbon footprint associated with
fisheries and aquaculture.
-Propose roles for fishing organizations in improving energy efficiency and
reducing the carbon footprint associated with fisheries and aquaculture.
Identify current gaps in energy efficiency research and develop a research
agenda.
-Propose sustainability certification criteria for seafood products related to energy
efficiency.
-Develop a set of metrics to measure the level of energy reduction or improved
environmental efficacy of different fuel types used by the fishing industry.
-Develop a final report (proceedings) from the plenary discussions, presentations,
and rapporteur reports to distribute to symposium participants.
