This report focuses on catch volumes of tuna, shark and swordfish in Japanese and European Union waters. It also highlights prices, inventories, markets, imports and exports of species detailed in the following index.

1. ASIA

1.1 Japan

Northern bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus and Thunnus orientalis)
Southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii)

Prices

The average CIF price of fresh bluefin imported by Japan in June was JPY 1,829/kg, down 4% on that of the previous month but up 41% on that of June 2014. During the first six months, the average was JPY 1,561/kg, up 1% on that of the same period last year.

Markets

During June, about 415 tonnes of fresh bluefin were imported, worth JPY 750 million at Japanese Customs.

These figures are up 31% in volume and 25% in value on those registered during the previous month. Compared with June 2014, imports fell 12% in volume but rose 23% in value.

In the period, imports reached 2,474 tonnes and JPY 3,861 million, down 17% in volume and 16% in value on those of the same period last year.

In the period the main origin of Japanese imports of northern bluefin (Thunnus thynnus and/or Thunnus orientalis) was Mexico with 1,207 tonnes and JPY 2,019 million, followed by Korea with 467 tonnes and JPY 284 million.

The main supplier of southern bluefin was Australia, with 294 tonnes worth JPY 168 million.

2. EUROPE

2.1 European Union

Landed volumes

Spain

Incoming volumes declined mainly in frozen swordfish and fresh blue shark on Mercamadrid during week 30. Those of the rest of tunid and squaliform species increased. The most important rises were those in fresh albacore and frozen albacore.

France

Volumes landed at French ports during week 30 increased significantly after many weeks without any volumes. The main port was Lorient.

Italy

Italian ports saw their volumes decline slightly in the case of tunid and squaliform species during week 30, except for picked dogfish that registered a slight rise. Aci Trezza was the main port of these landed volumes.

Prices

Prices of skipjack on Bangkok remained, after the last rises, at USD 1,770/t.

Spain

In Spain the price of skipjack also stayed at EUR 1,500/t EXW Spain, and so did that of yellowfin tuna at EUR 1,750/t EXW Spain, due to a still low demand in the canning sector.

Prices of fresh albacore declined on Mercamadrid during week 30 because of a rise in supplies. That of fresh swordfish increased due to a higher demand.

On French first-sale markets, during week 30, prices of horned octopus declined because of a rise in supplies.

Italy

At Italian first-sale markets prices have increased in the case of albacore and swordfish. Those of bullet tuna and picked dogfish declined.
