This report focuses on catch volumes of tuna, shark and swordfish in Japanese and European Union waters. It also highlights prices, inventories, markets, imports and exports of species detailed in the following index.

1. ASIA

1.1 Japan

Skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis)
Albacore (Thunnus alalunga)
Yellowfin (Thunnus albacares)
Bluefin tuna (Thunnus Thynnus)
Bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus)

Markets

Total imports of fresh and frozen tuna reached about 15,073 tonnes, with a value at Japanese Customs of JPY 9,296 million in May. These figures are down 17% in volume and 15% in value on those of April and compared with those of May 2015, the volume is up 32% and the value is down 48%.

Imports of fresh tuna during the month reached 1,561 tonnes with a value of JPY 1,986 million at Japanese Customs, down 4% in volume and 12% in value on those of the previous month, and up 18% in volume and 17% in value on those of May 2015.

As regards frozen tuna, imports during the month reported 13,512 tonnes, worth JPY 7,370 million at Japanese Customs.

These figures are down 19% in volume and 15% in value on those of the previous month and compared with those of May 2015, the volume is up 34% and so is the value by 59%.

2. EUROPE

2.1 European Union

Landed volumes

Spain

On Marcabarna, during week 27, the most important drops were registered in volumes of frozen shortfin mako and fresh swordfish. The most significant increases were those in fresh tope shark, fresh shortfin mako and fresh northern albacore.

On the wholesale market of Mercamadrid, during week 27, supplies of shortfin mako and swordfish declined. Those of albacore increased.

Italy

At Italian ports, during week 27, volumes of bullet tuna and Atlantic albacore declined. Those of swordfish increased and the volumes of bullet tuna were few. Aci Trezza was the main port of these landed volumes.

Prices

Prices of skipjack on Bangkok dropped to USD 1,400/kg.

Spain

The price of yellowfin stayed at EUR 2,550/t EXW Spain. The price of skipjack > 1.8 kg dropped to EUR 1,360/t EXW Spain.

As regards squaliform species, prices of swordfish increased.

On Marcabarna, during week 27, the most important drops in prices were registered in frozen shortfin mako and fresh tope shark, due to the rise in supplies. There was also a significant decline in fresh albacore, as a consequence of the lower demand. No considerable rises were reported.

On the wholesale market of Mercabarna, during week 27, supplies of all tunid and squaliform species increased. That of albacore also soared following a higher demand. That of albacore also soared following a drop in supplies.

Italy

On Italian first-sale markets, the average prices of Atlantic albacore declined due to the lower demand. That of swordfish increased due to the higher demand.
