This report focuses on catch volumes of tuna, shark and swordfish in Japanese and European Union waters. It also highlights prices, inventories, markets, imports and exports of species detailed in the following index.

1.1 Japan

Northern bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus)
Southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii)

Prices

The average price at Japan Customs of frozen bluefin (HS 030345000 and 030346000) was JPY 1,806/kg in February, up 18% on that of November and down 9% on that of February 2015. In the two months, the average was USD 1,684/kg, down 8% on that of the same period in 2015.

Markets

In the month analysed, imports reached 165 tonnes of frozen bluefin, worth JPY 298 million at Japanese Customs, up 25% in volume and 48% in value on those of the previous month and down 82% and 84% respectively on those of February 2015.

During the period, imports reached 297 tonnes, worth JPY 500 million, down 87% in volume and 88% in value on those of the previous year.

2. EUROPE

2.1 European Union

Landed volumes

Spain

On Mercamadrid, during week 16, supplies of blue shark increased. Those of albacore, shortfin mako and swordfish, both fresh and frozen, declined. The most significant drop was that in fresh and frozen swordfish.

Italy

At Italian ports, during week 16, volumes of Atlantic albacore, bullet tuna and swordfish dropped. Aci Trezza was the main port of these landed volumes.

Prices

Prices of skipjack on Bangkok and Ecuador remained at USD 1,600/kg.

Spain

In Spain, the price of yellowfin stayed at EUR 1,710/t EXW Spain. The price of skipjack stayed at EUR 1,400/t EXW Spain. Prices of swordfish declined from those of the previous week.

Prices on Mercamadrid increased in the case of fresh and frozen swordfish, due to a drop in supplies, during week 16. Those of albacore and shortfin mako dropped due to the lower demand.

Italy

Prices on Italian first-sale markets declined in the case of bullet tuna, due to a lower demand. That of swordfish and albacore increased due to the decline in supplies.
