Eels (Anguilla anguilla and Anguilla japonica)
Prices
At Japanese Customs, the average price for live eels in May was JPY 4,114/kg, down 8% on that of the previous month and up 49% on that of May 2011. In the first five months, the price averaged JPY 3,982, up 83% on that of the same period in 2011.

During the same month, the processed eels reached an average price at Customs of JPY 3,576/kg, up 5% on that of the previous month and up 63% on that of April 2011. During the period they averaged JPY 3,218, up 60% on those of 2011.

Markets
Imports of live eels for consumption during the analysed month totaled 368 tonnes and JPY 1,514 million, up 23% in volume and 13% in value compared with the previous month. They were down 54% in volume and 31% in value on those of the same month in 2005, according to preliminary figures provided by Japan Customs.

During the five months, imports of the product from China dropped 31% in volume and rose 22% in value compared with those of 2011, while those of Taiwan dropped 76% in volume and 54% in value.

Imports of processed products in the month reached 1,148 tonnes worth JPY 4,105 million, up 5% in volume and 10% in value on those of the previous month. Compared with May 2011 they were down 11% in volume but up 24% in value.

During the period, imports of processed products from China dropped 18% in volume and increased 31% in value on those of 2011 and those from Taiwan declined 82% and 63% respectively.
