This market report focuses on catches and harvests of live eel and Japanese eel in the Far East. We deal with aspects such as catches, prices and imports.

Eels (Anguilla anguilla and Anguilla japonica)

Prices

At Japanese Customs, the average price for live eels in May was JPY 3,445/kg, up 1% on that of the previous month and 16% on that of May 2012. In the first five months, the price averaged JPY 3,463, down 13% on that of the same period in 2012.

During the same month, the processed eels reached an average price at Customs of JPY 3,012/kg, down 3% on that of the previous month and down 16% on that of May 2012. During the period they averaged JPY 3,084, down 4% on those of 2012.

Markets

Imports of live eels for consumption during the analysed month totaled 436 tonnes and JPY 1,502 million, up 24% in volume and 26% in value compared with the previous month. Compared with the same month in 2005, there was a rise of 18% in volume and it was down 1% in value according to the preliminary figures of the Japanese Customs.

During the five months, imports of the product from China dropped 11% in volume and 21% in value compared with those of 2012, while those of Taiwan dropped 46% in volume and 57% in value.

Imports of processed products in the month reached 1,020 tonnes worth JPY 3,072 million, down 22% in volume and 24% in value on those of the previous month. Compared with May 2012 they were down 11% in volume and 25% in value.

During the period imports of processed products from China dropped 26% in volume and 29% in value from those of 2012.
