This market report focuses on catch volumes and harvests of live eel and Japanese eel in the Far East. We deal with aspects such as prices and imports.

Eels (Anguilla anguilla and Anguilla japonica)

Prices

At Japanese Customs, the average price for live eels in April was JPY 3,398/kg, down 3% on that of the previous month and 24% on that of April 2012. In the first four months, the price averaged JPY 3,469, down 12% on that of the same period in 2012.

During the same month, the processed eels reached an average price at Customs of JPY 3,095/kg, up 2% on that of the previous month and down 9% on that of April 2012. During the period they averaged JPY 3,108, down 1% on those of 2012.

Markets

Imports of live eels for consumption during the analysed month totaled 352 tonnes and JPY 1,196 million, up 22% in volume and 18% in value compared with the previous month. Compared with the same month in 2005, there was a rise of 18% in volume and it was down 10% in value according to the preliminary figures of the Japanese Customs.

During the four months, imports of the product from China dropped 23% in volume and 30% in value compared with those of 2012, while those from Taiwan dropped 47% in volume and 58% in value from those of the previous year.

Imports of processed products in the month reached 1,310 tonnes worth JPY 4,055 million, up 134% in volume and 139% in value on those of the previous month. Compared with April 2012 they were up 20% in volume and 9% in value.
