Eels (Anguilla anguilla and Anguilla japonica)
Prices
At Japanese Customs, the average price of live eels in March was JPY 4,437/kg, up 18% on that of the previous month and up 107% on that of March 2011. In the three months, the price averaged JPY 3,851, up 96% on that of the same period in 2011.

During the same month, the processed eels reached an average price at Customs of JPY 3,182/kg, up 5% on that of the previous month and up 58% on that of March 2011. During the period they averaged JPY 3,035, up 55% on those of 2011.

Markets
Imports of live eels for consumption during the analysed month totaled 391 tonnes and JPY 1,735 million, down 19% in volume and 5% in value compared with the previous month. They were down 58% in volume and 14% in value on those of the same month in 2005, according to preliminary figures provided by Japan Customs.

During the three months, imports of the product from China dropped 13% in volume and rose 66% in value compared with those of 2011, while those of Taiwan dropped 76% in volume and 50% in value.

Imports of processed products in the month reached 1,206 tonnes worth JPY 3,838 million, up 22% in volume and 28% in value on those of the previous month. Compared with March 2011 they were down 41% in volume and 7% in value.

During the three months, imports of processed products from China dropped 17% in volume and increased 29% in value on those of 2011 and those from Taiwan declined 72% and 42% respectively.
