Eels (Anguilla anguilla and Anguilla japonica)
Prices
At Japanese Customs, the average price of live eels in February was JPY 3,567/kg, up 4% on that of the previous month and down 5% on that of February 2012. In the first two months, the price averaged JPY 3,488, down 4% on that of the same period in 2012.

During the same month, the processed eels reached an average price of JPY 3,158/kg at Customs, similar to that of the previous month and up 5% on that of February 2012. During the period they averaged JPY 3,155, up 7% on those of 2012.

Markets
Imports of live eels for consumption during the analysed month totaled 247 tonnes and JPY 881 million, down 30% in volume and 27% in value compared with the previous month. They were down 49% in volume and 52% in value on those of the same month in 2005, according to preliminary figures provided by Japan Customs.

During the two months, imports of the product from China dropped 46% in volume and 48% in value compared with those of 2012, while those from Taiwan dropped 42% in volume and 48% in value from those of the previous year.

Imports of processed products in the month reached 660 tonnes worth JPY 2,084 million, up 14% in volume and value on those of the previous month. Compared with February 2012 they were down 33% in volume and 30% in value.

During the period imports of processed products from China dropped 42% in volume and 38% in value from those of 2012.
