Prices
At Japanese Customs, the average price for live eels in December 2011 was JPY 3,108/kg, up 8% on that of the previous month and 77% on that of December 2010. So far this year, the price has averaged JPY 2,491, up 61% on that of the same period in 2011.

During the same month, the processed eels reached an average price at Customs of JPY 2,966/kg, up 1% on that of the previous month and up 51% on that of December 2010. During the period they averaged JPY 2,322, up 45% on those of 2010.

Markets
Imports of live eels for consumption during the analysed month totaled 685 tonnes and JPY 2,129 million, up 30% in volume and 41% in value compared with the previous month. They were down 43% in volume and up 1% in value on those of the same month in 2010, according to preliminary figures provided by Japan Customs.

During January-December, imports of the product from China dropped 21% in volume and rose 21% in value compared with those of 2010, while those of Taiwan dropped 45% in volume and 9% in value.

Imports of processed products in the month reached 1,219 tonnes, worth JPY 3,616 million, up 25% in volume and 27% in value on those of the previous month. Compared with December 2010 they were down 9% in volume and up 38% in value.

During the year, imports of processed eels from China declined by 35% in volume and 4% in value from those of 2010 while those from Taiwan dropped 56% in volume and 42% in value.
