This report focuses on catch volumes of different species of cephalopods in the EU and Argentina. We also inform on fishing bans, prices, inventories, markets, imports and exports of the species in the index.
1. EUROPE
1.1 European Union
Squid, shortfin squid, cuttlefish and octopus
Spain
Supplies of cephalopods dropped by 176 tonnes on Mercabarna in October, compared with the previous month. The most important drops were those in fresh peeled giant squid, fresh squid stripes, fresh giant squid, frozen clean crushed giant squid and frozen national squid. The most important increase was that in fresh squid.
On the wholesale market of Mercamadrid, incoming volumes of squid rose by 108 tonnes in October. The most important rises were those in frozen national squid, frozen clean giatn squid, frozen Patagonian squid, Californian squid and Indian squid. The most important drop was that in frozen shortfin squid.

France
Volumes landed at French ports during October increased in the case of squid and declined in cuttlefish. The main ports were Boulogne/Mer with 214 tonnes, Port en Bessin with 141 tonnes, Les Sables D'olonne with 113 tonnes and La Turballe with 111 tonnes.

Italy
At Italian ports, during October, volumes of cuttlefish declined and those of the rest of cephalopod species increased. The main ports were Ancona with 16 tonnes, Aci Trezza with 11 tonnes and Civitanova Marche with 7tonnes.

Spain
On Mercabarna, in October, the most important declines were registered in fresh baby squid, fresh squid and fresh octopus, all of them due to bulkier supplies. The most significant There were some drops also in frozen Chinese squid, frozen Indian squid, frozen Patagonian squid and frozen tentacles, all due to a lower demand. That of frozen Galician octopus, fresh giant squid, frozen shortfin squid, frozen squid fried in butter and fresh cooked octopus increased because of a drop in supplies.
On Mercamadrid, prices of cephalopods remained stable in all species, except for that of fresh squid that dropped by EUR 3.10/kg

Italy
On Italian first sale markets, in October, prices increased in squid, giant squid and octopus; those of bobtail, shortfin squid and horned octopus declined.

2.1 Argentina
Landed volumes
At Argentine ports, in October, volumes of Illex squid increased significantly from those of September. Volumes landed this year have been almost twice those registered during the same period in 2016.

MARKETS
Exports of Illex squid reached 256 tonnes in August. The average price of these exports was EUR 2.56/kg. Compared with August 2016, they are down 94.3%. However, total exports in Jan/Aug increased by 67.3%.
