This market report focuses on catches and harvests of live eel and Japanese eel in the Far East. We deal with aspects such as catches, prices and imports.

Japan

Eel (Anguilla anguilla and Anguilla japónica)

Prices

At Japanese Customs, the average price of live eels in October was JPY 2,885/kg, down 4% on that of the previous month and up 5% on that of October 2011. In the first ten months, the price averaged JPY 3,582, up 48% on that of the same period in 2011.

During the same month, the processed eels reached an average price at Customs of JPY 3,040/kg, up 1% on that of the previous month and up 10% on that of October 2011. During the period they averaged JPY 3,260, up 47% on those of 2011.

Markets

Imports of live eels for consumption during the analysed month totaled 139 tonnes and JPY 401 million, down 21% in volume and 23% in value compared with the previous month. They were down 54% in volume and 51% in value on those of the same month in 2005, according to preliminary figures provided by Japan Customs.

During January-October, imports of the product from China dropped 33% in volume and were similar in value compared to those of 2011, while those of Taiwan dropped 71% in volume and 58% in value.

Imports of processed products in the month reached 371 tonnes, worth JPY 1,128 million, up 40% in volume and 42% in value on those of the previous month. Compared with October 2011 they were down 59% in volume and 55% in value.

During the period, imports of processed eels from China declined by 35% in volume and 5% in value from those of 2011 while those from Taiwan dropped 80% in volume and 62% in value.
