This market report focuses on catches and harvests of live eel and Japanese eel in the Far East. We deal with aspects such as catches, prices and imports.

Eels (Anguilla anguilla and Anguilla japonica)

Prices

At Japanese Customs, the average price of live eels in August was JPY 3,110/kg, similar to that of the previous month and up 17% on that of August 2011. In the first eight months, the price averaged JPY 3,635, up 52% on that of the same period in 2011.

During the same month, the processed eels reached an average price of JPY 3,031/kg at Customs, down 10% on that of the previous month and up 26% on that of August 2011. During the period they averaged JPY 3,280, up 53% on those of 2011.

Markets

Imports of live eels for consumption totaled 401 tonnes and JPY 1,247 million during the analysed month, down 57% in volume and value compared with the previous month. They were down 53% in volume and 45% in value on those of the same month in 2005, according to preliminary figures provided by Japan Customs.

During the eight months, imports of the product from China dropped 35% in volume and 2% in value compared with those of 2011, while those of Taiwan dropped 70% in volume and 55% in value.

Imports of processed products in the month reached 350 tonnes, worth JPY 1,061 million, down 38% in volume and 44% in value on those of the previous month. Compared with August 2011 they were down 49% in volume and 35% in value.

During the period, imports of processed products from China dropped 27% in volume and increased 12% in value on those of 2011 and those from Taiwan declined 81% and 63% respectively.
