Skipper was born as an initiative that seeks to make visible the events related to illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) and piracy at sea. Our mission is to raise awareness about this problem and encourage more people to monitor our oceans. For this, we have two tools that are detailed below: Skipper mobile app.
The Skipper mobile application allows fishermen to report, during fishing, activities that affect the health of our oceans and livelihoods dependent on fishing. This free application allows you to report on suspected IUU fishing and piracy events.
The reports include GPS coordinates, photos and videos to add more transparency to global efforts to improve fisheries sustainability by helping local authorities plan for more efficient monitoring, control and surveillance (MCV). Submitted data is cryptographically verified and reviewed to ensure accuracy and published online. Skipper invites its users to use these reports to make formal complaints to the competent maritime authorities of each country.
