Project details

We are a governmental institution, we have invested in the farm. We are looking for a company, already sucessfully involved in the shrimp farming industry, to include our farm in its global production strategy.

The value of our investment is well over 25 million us$ (farm 450 hectares, hatchery, processing plant and freezing plant).

So, we are ready to accept very interesting terms for the long lease (including grace period...) of the facilities but we want the operator to fully support the operating costs.

We give access to the facilities but we want full involvement of the operator.

Infrastructure

  1. Hatchery (TAMARA)
    • The buildings are spread over 1.5 hectare of fenced land
    • The hatchery is organised around three departements:
      • Maturation: The building covers 2000 sq meters : 36 round tanks (7 m3 each) in three different rooms. This building also includes rooms for eclosion, cold store (negative & positive), two labs (observation & preparation of feed). Outside the building we have 4 squared tanks of 50 m3 used to stock genitors. The hydraulic system is supplied by two pomps (40m3/h. each) The air system is supplied by four turbins (470m3/h each). Filtration sand system (2) and cartridges (10 &1 µm) complete the network.
      • Larvae: The building covers 650 sq meters and shelter 23 U tanks (15m3 each). These tanks are located in two rooms. This building also includes the artemia production room, microbilogie lab, technical room (filtration ) & two offices . Outside, a shed covers the nursery : 6 square tanks (50m3 each). The hydraulic system is supplied by three pumps (40m3/h each). The air system is supplied by five turbins (470m3/h each) Filtration is provided by two sand filters, cartridge filters (10 &5µm)
      • Weeds: the building covers 170sq meters (rooms for different production stages). An area is reserved for the tanks devoted to outside production (24 tanks of 1m3 each). Two pumps are supplying the weed area (40m3/h & 25m3/h). Filtration: two sand filters, cartridge filters (10, 1 & 0.22µm) as well as a uv filter for part of the network.
    • Other equipment
      • Pumping water from the sea (three electric pomps 130 m3/h)
      • Steam plant (1400KW)
      • Fresh water well (5m3/h with tank)
      • Two generators (125 & 175 kva) & one 45kVa (emergency)
      • Fuel tank 30 000 liters
  2. Farm (KOBA)
    • The ponds are spread over 600 hetares. The farm was designed for semi intensive production (2/5 tonnes per hectare)
      • Growing ponds : 43 ponds covering 372 hectares
      • Pre-growing ponds : 19 ponds (17.9 hecatres)
      • Genitors : 4 ponds (6.7 hectares)
      • Supplied in water by a pumping station. and a network of canals. Each pond (6 to 10 hectares) has a concrete entry to the management of water.
      • The ponds are 1 meter deep
      • The start up ponds (1 hectare each) are designed to bring the shrimps up to 1 gram.
    • Pumping is provided by 7 pumps (1.7m3/s each). These pumps (Rutschi) are powered by 7 RENAULT engines (100 hp)
    • Tanks for fuel 90 000 liters
    • Technical building : 250 sq meters
    • Two generators (50 &15 kVa)
  3. Processing unit
    • The factory covers 1550 sq meters and was designed to comply with EU requirements:
      • The packing room (485 sq meters is air conditionned (down to 12° c)
      • Freezing plant two plate freezer (840kg in three hours each ) et one freezing tunnel (3 tonnes in 15 hours). Two coldstore positive ( 5 tons), negative (100 tons).
      • Cold is produced by 4 compressors (45 kw each)
      • Ice plant (flakes) 5 tons per day
    • Headquarters
      • Buildings spread over 15 000 square meters (maintenance unit, warehouse, offices..)
      • Fleet of 10 vehicles (pick-up, ..)
    • Supply in electricity : two generators 400 kVa each, one generator 275 kVa powered by RENAULT engines.

Environment

  1. The hatchery is located on an island facing CONAKRY (20 mn boat trip). This location was choosen for the specific requirement of water during the eclosion and larvae stages
  2. The farm and the processing plant are located on the coastal area 100 km north from CONAKRY, the farm is located in an extensive mangrove area without any concentration of population or competitive activities as you can see from the picture you received. Access is possible by road, or by sea.
  3. The coastal area of Guinea is basically all mangrove swamps. Guinea coastal water are among the most biollogically productive in West Africa

Water quality

  • The water quality at the hatchery meets requirements
  • The water quality at the farm level needs an adaptation of pumping to avoid the mud aspiration

Socio-economic data

  • Guinea is a west african country approximatly 250 000 square kilometers, 7 million inhabitants.
  • The main ressources are coming from the mines (bauxite, gold, diamond) with a quick development of agricultural export activities (banana, mangoes, pine apple..)
  • the income per capita/year is 450 us $
  • official linguage : French

Transport availability

  • transport by cargo container is quite easy connection withEurrope (maersk line, ) Asia, & US
  • air freight (SABENA, AIR FRANCE...). Daily connection to Paris & Brussels

Construction/operational time frame

  1. Construction phase ending in january 1997
  2. Trial period january 1997- may 1999
  3. Research for partnership october 1999

Climate data (rainfall & temperature).

  • Tropical climate with high rainfall (. 2000mm/4000mm/year)
  • average temperature 27°
  • Dry season December to may
  • Rainy season June to November
