Despite the Norwegian krone being significantly stronger than in August 2025, the value of seafood exports reached a historic high. This performance was primarily driven by increased salmon (Salmo salar) volumes at higher prices, along with price rises for cod (Gadus morhua), mackerel (Scomber scombrus), herring (Clupea harengus), and saithe (Pollachius virens), according to Christian Chramer, CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council.
Cumulative performance and US recovery
So far in 2026, Norway has exported seafood worth NOK 115.7 billion (US$ 10.99 billion). This represents an increase of NOK 2.6 billion (US$ 247 million), or 2 per cent, compared with the same period in 2025.
Seafood exports to the US had slowed sharply in 2026, with punitive tariffs on Norway rising to 12.5 per cent. Nevertheless, in August, for the very first time this year, there was a rise in export value to the US market, reaching NOK 1.1 billion (US$ 104.5 million), up 4 per cent year-on-year.

Growth in the US was driven mainly by salmon. Christian Chramer explained that favourable biological conditions during the summer provided large quantities of high-quality fish, which saw strong demand in the lucrative sushi segment. Furthermore, underlying global demand for Norwegian salmon continues to drive up both prices and total export value.
Top export destinations in August
The value of Norwegian seafood exports across major markets in August was distributed as follows:
-
Poland: NOK 2.23 billion (US$ 211.85 million), up +36%.
-
China: NOK 1.4 billion (US$ 133 million), up +34%.
-
The Netherlands: NOK 1.16 billion (US$ 110.2 million), up +31%.
-
USA: NOK 1.13 billion (US$ 107.35 million), up +4%.
-
United Kingdom: NOK 900 million (US$ 85.5 million), up +16%.

Poland was Norway's largest market by value and recorded the highest absolute growth. The Netherlands overtook the USA to become the third-largest market. While both countries are traditionally regarded as processing hubs, data from the Norwegian Seafood Council indicates that domestic salmon consumption is expanding in both nations, as well as in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Record aquaculture share and historic salmon figures
In August, farmed fish exports reached NOK 13 billion (US$ 1.235 billion), accounting for 81.4 per cent of total seafood export value—the highest share ever recorded. Quota restrictions on wild fisheries influenced this shift, with farmed cod representing 72 per cent of the fresh cod export value during the month.

Poland saw the greatest value growth for salmon, increasing by NOK 487 million (US$ 46.265 million) or 32 per cent, with volumes reaching 28,800 tonnes (+21%). The Netherlands followed with an increase of NOK 293 million (US$ 27.835 million), up 40 per cent. Market analyst Paul T. Aandahl noted that these results reflect solid European demand for processed salmon products. Whole fish accounted for 78 per cent of salmon exports in August, compared to 75 per cent in the same month last year.
