Inventory Scarcity in the Asian Giant and Preventive Fishing Suspensions in Peruvian Waters Heighten Pressure on Marine Ingredients and Accelerate the Search for Alternative Proteins

The global marine ingredients market remains under intense pressure. In China, fishmeal inventories across major ports have dropped to nearly five-year lows, according to tracking data from week 32. The reduced availability of Peruvian product combined with peak seasonal aquaculture demand has driven prices significantly higher than those recorded in 2025. This cost escalation is forcing feed mills to exercise greater caution and lower the inclusion rate of fishmeal in various formulations.

The primary focus of tension remains centered in Peru. The Ministry of Production maintains the suspension of anchovy (Engraulis ringens) fishing in the North-Central region as a conservation measure, enacted following reports of high juvenile presence and adverse oceanographic conditions. According to data compiled by RTVE, only 24.6% of the total authorized quota was harvested in that geographical zone prior to the closure.

The international organization IFFO confirmed that Peruvian output — which typically accounts for nearly 20% of the global supply of fishmeal and fish oil — has been severely impacted by precautionary measures linked to El Niño. Furthermore, the organization cautions regarding a highly constrained supply of fish oil for 2026, projecting an annual Asian market deficit of 1.2 million tonnes of fishmeal and 80,000 tonnes of fish oil destined for aquaculture and direct human consumption.

For its part, the Peruvian industry maintains that it is partially mitigating the operational impact through technological progress and processing efficiency. According to figures from the National Fisheries Society, processing plants currently require an average of 4.2 tonnes of anchovy to produce one tonne of fishmeal, comparing favorably with the six tonnes required decades ago. The industry association attributes to this modernization process an approximate 30% increase in processing efficiency, a reduction of nearly 24% in fuel consumption, and the recovery of more than 2.8 million kilograms of fishing nets between 2019 and 2026.

Although these efficiency gains optimize the environmental and operational footprint per tonne produced, they cannot offset the sharp decline in overall catch volume on their own. Given this scenario, the feed industry is accelerating partial substitution through poultry meal, authorized animal by-products, plant proteins, insect meal, microalgae, and fermented raw materials. However, IFFO emphasizes that premium fishmeal grades still have very few effective substitutes in high-performance aquaculture diets.

The implementation of precision nutrition, enhanced utilization of fish trimmings and processing by-products, alongside strategic supplier diversification, will serve as critical factors while the Chinese market awaits a potential recovery in Peruvian supply.
