The Australian company seeks to secure necessary capital to boost its ambitious seafood aquaculture project in the Northern Territory while maintaining operations in Queensland

Seafarms Group keeps the search for funding open to develop Project Sea Dragon, considered one of the most ambitious prawn aquaculture projects in Australia. The company continues working to complete the transfer of licenses and authorizations from the project company, currently in liquidation, to its subsidiary Sea Dragon Shrimp Pty Ltd.

In its latest quarterly report presented to the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) on July 31, Seafarms Group indicated that it remains in advanced negotiations with several potential funders with the aim of securing the necessary capital and reaching a final investment decision. As part of its financial strategy, the company also indicated that it is studying additional alternatives, including the sale of certain assets and obtaining new debt.

The project's development faces various financial and legal obstacles. Notable among them is a court dispute over 1.4 million Australian dollars held by the liquidator of Project Sea Dragon Pty Ltd. Seafarms Group management anticipates a favorable court ruling, although it acknowledges that the funds could be allocated to creditors if the court rules otherwise.

The company needs to resolve these regulatory and liquidity uncertainties before moving towards industrial-scale expansion. The original plan was conceived as a large integrated prawn farming operation in northern Australia, encompassing production, processing, and logistics oriented towards both the domestic and export markets.

While working on the restructuring and financing of Sea Dragon, Seafarms Group maintains its operations active in Queensland. During the quarter ended June 30, the company completed a harvest of 242 tonnes of black tiger prawns (Penaeus monodon). The majority of the production was processed as frozen raw product for export, while the remaining volume was destined for cooked product sales within the Australian market. The company reported quarterly revenues of 1.6 million Australian dollars, stemming entirely from its export operations.

Operationally, the group reported significant progress in its breeding program located at the Exmouth hatchery, as well as preparations at the Innisfail facilities to start post-larvae production during the third quarter. This installed capacity will serve to supply its own operations and generate revenue through commercial sales to other producers in the sector.

The commercial opportunity for Seafarms Group in the seafood market is considerable, given the growing demand for prawns in Australia. However, expanding local production requires substantial capital investment, strict biosecurity protocols, post-larvae availability, balanced feed, processing infrastructure, and stable access to international markets.

The main risk for the firm lies in Project Sea Dragon becoming paralyzed again due to lack of liquidity. The company itself acknowledged that it has a reduced cash position and requires securing additional resources in the short term to sustain its ongoing operations and meet its corporate objectives.

For the time being, the project is in a critical phase of financing and reorganization, so it cannot be considered an approved or fully funded expansion. The course of negotiations, the ruling on the 1.4 million Australian dollars held, and the final transfer of operating licenses will constitute the next milestones determining the project's viability.

Seafarms GroupProject Sea Dragon

Project Sea Dragon
