Oceana Seafood Specialties joins the organization, emphasizing its commitment to sustainable sourcing and long-term industry stewardship.
Reston, VA – The National Fisheries Institute’s (NFI) Crab Council has announced that Oceana Seafood Specialties LLC is its newest member. Oceana, an importer and supplier with a diverse range of products including premium Blue Swimming Crab, joins the council with a strong focus on sustainability.
"Sustainability is a key factor in every product we offer, and the Council’s leadership in Fisheries Improvement Projects (FIPs) made joining an easy decision," said Jeffrey Martinez-Malo, CEO of Oceana.
The executive team at Oceana brings nearly five decades of combined experience in managing the seafood supply chain, from harvest to distribution. The company is known for its commitment to a reliable network that delivers consistent, high-quality seafood. In addition to sourcing, Oceana works with clients on business development to build brand awareness and drive category growth.
NFI Crab Council Executive Director Ed Rhodes highlighted the council's long-term commitment to sustainability. "For over 16 years, the Crab Council has supported six active FIPs, funded high-level scientific research, and maintained a forward-looking approach to sustainability," Rhodes said. He emphasized that the council's strategy involves sustained engagement within crab communities rather than temporary interventions.
Martinez-Malo added that a successful growth strategy requires close collaboration with harvesters and manufacturers, and that understanding the full sustainability story is essential. He stated that in the crab industry, this story is tied to the NFI Crab Council.
The NFI Crab Council, founded in 2009, practices industry-led stewardship by addressing fishery needs through scientific, social, and financial channels.
