Kamchatka leads production as scientists adjust quotas upward

The red salmon fishing season in the Russian Far East has passed its peak, especially with regard to the catch of pink salmon, the main species. However, fishing for chum, sockeye, and coho salmon is still expected to continue in some areas.

According to the latest data from August 8, 2025, the total Pacific salmon caught in the Far Eastern basin has reached 267,300 tons. This figure represents a significant performance that already exceeds 50% of the initial annual projection, indicating a strong season, especially when compared to the 2024 catch, which was the worst in two decades.

Breakdown of the total by region:

• Kamchatka Krai: 225,400 tons (84.3% of the total volume), establishing itself as the undisputed leader of the season.

• Khabarovsk Krai: Approximately 15,500 tons.

• Magadan Region: More than 11,100 tons.

• Primorsky Krai: More than 8,800 tons.

• Sakhalin Region: 6,000 tons.

• Chukotka Autonomous Okrug: More than 307 tons.

CComposition of catches by species:

• Pink salmon: 209,368 tons (78.3%)

• Sockeye salmon: 37,405 tons (14%)

• Chum salmon: 20,078 tons (7.5%)

• Coho salmon: 897 tons

• Chinook salmon: 232 tons

• Sima salmon (Masu salmon - Oncorhynchus masou): 43 tons

The All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) is providing crucial scientific support. Following a successful season, scientists have prepared 19 recommendations to adjust catch volumes, allowing for an increase of 118,261 tons in quotas. This has raised the total projection for wild salmon to more than 425,000 tons, a 36% increase from the initial estimate. The season will continue until the autumn, with fishing in the Southern Kuril Islands extending until November 30.
