Construction and Operations Postponed Due to Earthquake Damage and Rising Costs

TOKYO — The groundbreaking project by Maruha Nichiro Corporation to establish a sustainable, domestic salmon production model has been postponed. The project, a joint venture with Mitsubishi Corporation called ATLAND Corp., has announced a new timeline for its land-based aquaculture facility, pushing the first commercial shipment back by two years.

While initial reports projected the facility to be operational in 2025 with the first commercial delivery in 2027, the new plan targets the first shipment for fiscal 2029 (ending March 2030). The delays are attributed to unforeseen challenges, including the impact of a recent earthquake and rising construction costs. Despite the setbacks, the project is moving forward with secured funding, including a US$11.66 million allocation.

The venture, which aims to reduce Japan's reliance on imported salmon and protect indigenous species, utilizes advanced RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems) technology. The facility is located in Nyuzen, Toyama Prefecture, a site strategically chosen for its access to deep seawater from Toyama Bay. This natural resource, which maintains a consistent temperature of around 3°C year-round, significantly reduces the energy required for temperature control, making the operation more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
