The executive director of the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP), Jose Luis Blanco García, is to participate in the Workshop in Korea on Assessment and Management of Marine Ecosystems in the Asian-Pacific region and APEC Pilot Projects on Large Marine Ecosystem.
Rodolfo Serra, a leading researcher of IFOP, will also attend the meeting organized by the Government of Korea at Hanyang University.
The projects on Large Marine Ecosystems (LME) are related to environmental issues addressed in global summits on environment and sustainable development.
According to a press release from the Institute, there are concerns about the sustainability of the services provided, which include fishing.
"Proper management of marine resources is essential to address the challenges, including overfishing and loss of marine biodiversity. This can be addressed effectively through international and regional cooperation," the document points out.
The goal of the workshop is to continue and develop the work begun in Phases I, II and III of the APEC Resource Conservation Large Marine Ecosystem Project.
Blanco Garcia and Serra, like the rest of the participants in the meeting were selected because of their ability in the assessment of marine resources, their knowledge from the lessons learned in the preparation of other LME projects funded by the Global Environment Fund (GEF) and from their scientific expertise in the organization and management of coastal zones adjacent to the sea in Indonesia, Sulu-Celebes Sea, and the large marine ecosystems of the Pacific in Central America.
When being asked about the importance the participation in this meeting has for Chile, Serra stated that "it is helpful to know what is useful for self-development and for the implementation of the ecosystem approach in the fisheries management from the experience in similar projects in other regions."
The institutions that co-organize the workshop are APEC, the Working Group of Marine Resource Conservation, APEC Oceans and Fisheries Working Group, Institute of Ocean Science and Technology of Korea (KIOST), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Corporation of the Marine Environment of Korea (Koem).
The workshop will be held in Seoul during the 12th and 13th August.
