Alaska Commercial Salmon Harvest Surpasses 33 Million Fish, but Still Trails Projections

Total catch reaches 27% of annual forecast, with significant declines in pink and chum salmon, while sockeye individuals average larger than in 2025.

The Alaska commercial salmon harvest through July 18 surpassed 33 million fish, reaching 27% of the annual projection. This season continues to lag significantly behind the average; harvest through statistical week 29 historically represents 36% of the annual projection.

Pink salmon harvests currently lag 80% behind harvests in 2024. Pink harvests are down most in Prince William Sound. A recent aerial survey showed "minimal" numbers of pink salmon specifically in the Eastern District of the Sound, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The Valdez Fisheries Development Association reported pausing cost recovery fishing in order to build hatchery brood stock.

Chum (keta) salmon harvests are 65% below 2025 through statistical week 29, with the Chignik fishery remaining the only chum fishery currently above its 2025 harvest. Similar to pink salmon harvests, chum harvests in Prince William Sound have been severely hindered by low returns and fewer fishery openings.

Both Bristol Bay and Copper River sockeye have been larger than fish caught in 2025. Copper River sockeye have averaged 5.8 pounds (2.63 Kg) and Bristol Bay sockeye have averaged 5.2 pounds (2.36 Kg) across the 2026 season.

2026 Average Fish Weights

  • Bristol Bay sockeye: 5.2 pounds (2.36 kg)

  • Copper River sockeye: 5.8 pounds (2.63 kg)
