According to data from the Industry Monitoring System of the Federal Agency for Fisheries (ISFRE), the Russian fishing fleet reached a cumulative volume of 2,669.6 thousand tons of aquatic bioresources as of July 20, 2026.

The Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo) presented the operational balance of bio-aquatic resource catches recorded by Russian vessels since the beginning of the year across the country's various fishing basins and in international waters.

Breakdown by fishing basins

Far Eastern Basin

The pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) catch forecast in the Sakhalin region exceeded initial expectations. Rosrybolovstvo will adjust the salmon fishing season parameters following the completion of the scientific expedition by the Russian Federal Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO). Research aboard the scientific vessel Professor Kaganovsky determined that the run of pink salmon in the waters of the Southern Kuril Islands is significantly higher than projected, which will allow the opening of fishing areas not originally contemplated.

According to VNIRO, the expected return of pink salmon spawners in the Sea of Okhotsk basin stands at approximately 180 million specimens, a figure that almost doubles the initial estimate. This volume allows projecting a catch of between 40,000 and 50,000 tons of Sakhalin-Kuril pink salmon for the current season. The expansion of operational quotas remains subject to ensuring sufficient escapement of spawners to spawning rivers.

Comprehensive trawl surveys developed by VNIRO for nearly 30 years make it possible to evaluate the pre-anadromous migrations of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) into the Sea of Okhotsk, determine stock composition, physiological condition, food supply, and background environmental conditions. These data support the sustainable management of the fishery and formed the scientific basis for record catches in 2018 (678,000 tons), 2021 (539,000 tons), and 2023 (609,000 tons).

The total volume landed amounted to 2,105.9 thousand tons. The main species recorded were:

  • Alaska pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus): 1,358.4 thousand tons.

  • Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii): 399.1 thousand tons, representing an increase of +100 thousand tons compared to the cumulative level in 2025.

  • Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus): 80.5 thousand tons, recording a growth of +0.1 thousand tons compared to 2025.

  • Far Eastern flounder (Pleuronectidae): 41.5 thousand tons.

Northern Basin

Catches totaled 207.8 thousand tons. Results by species highlight:

  • Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua): 96.7 thousand tons.

  • Haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus): 46.3 thousand tons, with a positive variation of +10.1 thousand tons compared to the same period in 2025.

The cumulative total reached 39.1 thousand tons:

  • Caspian sprat (Sprattus caspius): 14 thousand tons.

  • Freshwater and river ordinary fish species (Cyprinidae and other families): 9.7 thousand tons, exceeding by +0.3 thousand tons the figures reached in 2025.

Azov-Black Sea Basin

The overall record was 20.2 thousand tons:

  • Black Sea anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus): 12.4 thousand tons.

Operations in international and conventional waters

In the exclusive economic zones of foreign states, areas under international conventions, and the high seas of the World Ocean, the Russian-flagged fleet obtained a total catch of 237,022 tons of marine resources.
