Oceans of Data contends that tracking vessels transporting live fish allows for the detection of shifts in harvest rates before they appear in commercial statistics. The signal observed in Norway subsequently coincided with a reduction in exports, although the methodology has not yet been independently validated.

An Icelandic technology company is utilizing the movements of wellboats—specialized vessels used to transport live fish—as an early indicator of Norwegian salmon supply.

The company, Oceans of Data, explained that it analyzes the port calls made by these vessels at farming sites across different producing regions in Norway. The objective is to identify shifts in harvesting activity before the processed fish appear in official export statistics.

According to the analysis published by the company, wellboat activity peaked during week 26 of 2026 and subsequently declined by approximately 14% through week 28. The company interprets this reduction in port calls as a sign that the volume of fish being transferred from farms to processing plants was decreasing.

The principle is relatively straightforward: the wellboat must travel to the farming site before the salmon can be processed, sold, and recorded as an export. Consequently, vessel movement could provide an operational reading of supply several days ahead of trade statistics.

Official data subsequently published by Statistics Norway (SSB) confirmed at least the direction of the trend. Norway exported 26,117 tonnes of fresh salmon between July 6 and July 12, representing a 1.4% decrease compared to the 26,491 tonnes registered during the preceding seven days.

The reduction occurred while the average export price increased by 3.3%, reaching NOK 69.54 (US$ 7.24) per kilogram. This suggests that during that week, lower immediate availability coincided with price strengthening, despite the high volumes characteristic of the early Norwegian summer.

Oceans of Data highlights that the intelligence generated by wellboat traffic was available prior to statistical confirmation. For producers, processors, buyers, and traders, this time differential could prove significant: official statistics describe fish that has already been harvested and exported, whereas vessel movements may reveal supply formation in near real time.

However, the indicator should not be interpreted as an automated price forecast. Wellboats are also utilized to transfer smolts, conduct health treatments, or move fish between facilities. Furthermore, salmon prices depend on various other variables, including fish size, product mix, contract structures, demand, and foreign exchange rates.

The company itself acknowledges that the observed correlation does not prove that vessel movements dictate market prices. Its claim is more contained: the reduction in activity made it possible to detect the shift in supply before foreign trade figures made it visible.

An independent validation of the methodology also remains pending. Oceans of Data has not published the full list of monitored vessels, the coverage of farming sites, the criteria used to classify each port call, nor a historical time series that would allow for systematic verification of the indicator's predictive capabilities.

Even with these limitations, the case demonstrates how combining maritime tracking data, aquaculture site locations, and trade statistics can generate new market intelligence tools for the salmon industry.

While the innovation originates from Iceland, its initial public demonstration focuses on Norway, the world's leading producer of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). The next phase will involve verifying whether this relationship holds across different production cycles and whether it can be replicated in other key producing regions such as Chile, Scotland, the Faroe Islands, or Canada.

A note on the numbers. All figures are Oceans of Data's own, built from official trade data and third-party vessel-tracking. Prices are realised export values, not the Fish Pool spot price.

Oceans of Data

Oceans of Data

Oceans of Data

Oceans of Data

Oceans of Data
