The price volatility of fishmeal and fish oil forces the industry to shift from simple raw material replacement toward a functional optimization based on stable hybrid diets.

The global aquaculture industry is undergoing a profound transformation driven by a structural, rather than cyclical, scarcity of its traditional raw materials. According to a technical white paper published by the biotechnology firm Innovafeed dated July 20. 2026, the combination of climate pressures such as the El Niño phenomenon, biological overexploitation, and rising operational costs have completely shattered the commercial buffer that historically stabilized marine product prices and baseline aquafeed inputs.

The figures compiled in the research reflect a landscape of high volatility and global supply constraints:

  • The price of premium fish oil recorded an increase of more than 44% during the first quarter of 2026, approaching USD 7,000 per tonne.

  • Global fishmeal production plummeted by 28% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, according to data provided by the marine ingredients organization IFFO.

  • Peru, the world's largest fishmeal producer, completely suspended its anchoveta (Engraulis ringens) catching operations and extended the ban until June 2026 after recording a 35% drop in available biomass compared to previous estimates, managing to land only about a third of the intended quota. In parallel, Chile cut its anchovy catch quotas by 44%.

  • Super-prime fishmeal prices escalated sharply starting in May 2026, trading around USD 4,000 per tonne, compared to a baseline commodity benchmark of roughly USD 2,100 to USD 2,400.

  • A peer-reviewed scientific study published by the specialized journal Nature Food determined that under severe forage fish shortage scenarios, up to 1.8 million tonnes of alternative ingredients will be required annually just to maintain global aquaculture production steady at 2022 levels.

The sector analysis signed by Roel Boersma, Product Strategy and Marketing Director at Innovafeed, and Maye Walraven, Chief Business and Impact Officer of the same entity, warns that the traditional response of seeking direct, identical substitutes—such as poultry by-product meal or soybean meal—is both insufficient and risky. The authors explain that soy and terrestrial crops share correlated risks with extreme weather events like El Niño, which brings droughts and steep production falls in South America at the exact same moment it suppresses anchoveta fisheries. Meanwhile, poultry by-products compete with demand from terrestrial livestock, lifting their prices in parallel with fishmeal rather than away from it, losing their status as an economic refuge.

The true strategic value of marine ingredients in modern formulation does not lie solely in their crude protein volume, but in their bioactive and functional properties that promote immunity, gut health, palatability, and stress resilience in farmed species. In this scenario, the industry is moving firmly toward hybrid diets that optimize the use of marine resources where they deliver the highest biological value, complementing them with a diversified basket of stable new raw materials such as microalgae oils rich in EPA and DHA, single-cell proteins, and insect-derived ingredients.

Innovafeed believe the next generation of aquafeeds will combine several complementary ingredients rather than rely on a single substitute. Hilucia™ Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) ingredients naturally provide: Highly Digestible Protein Lauric Acid Antimicrobial Peptides Chitin Functional Lipids These compounds contribute not only to nutrition but also to gut health, immune support and animal robustness.

The controlled rearing technology of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae, commercialized by Innovafeed under the Hilucia range, stands out as a key component in this new nutritional model. Operating as a continuous industrial process developed in controlled environments with cycles measured in weeks rather than seasons, it offers long-term stability in volumes, technical specifications, and prices that the wild-catch marine market can no longer guarantee. The natural bioactive compounds of this insect ingredient—including highly digestible proteins, lauric acid, antimicrobial peptides, chitin, and functional lipids—act directly on animal robustness and health, showing critical efficacy in early life stages.

The commercial viability and return on investment of this strategy are already proven in starter and juvenile diets, particularly in shrimp production. Scientific trials at research scale showed increases of up to 25% in growth rate and 30% in feed efficiency for juvenile shrimp, recording significantly higher survival when challenged with pathogenic outbreaks caused by Vibrio bacteria, which are responsible for massive economic losses in the global shrimp farming industry.

The effectiveness of this integrated approach and the paradigm shift toward functional nutrition decoupled from ocean volatility are backed by direct testimonials from European specialists included in the biotechnology firm's report:

"In a strategic move to address the evolving demands of modern aquaculture, we have purposefully integrated insect meal into our feed formulations. This choice is driven not only by the need for sustainable sourcing but by a commitment to nutritional excellence. By leveraging this premium ingredient, we enrich our diets with highly digestible, top-tier proteins that support optimal growth rates. Furthermore, insect meal serves as a natural vehicle for key functional elements bioactive compounds that actively enhance the gut health, immune response and overall well-being of farmed fish, paving the way for a more resilient and efficient aquaculture value chain," stated Fabio Brambilla, PhD, Nutritionist at the commercial feed company NaturAlleva in Italy.

The report concludes by noting that the window of opportunity for feed companies and aquaculture producers to secure supply decoupled from marine climate crises is narrow. Structural scarcity has already decided that the industry will move beyond absolute marine dependency; the competitive edge for the next decade will lie in which companies proactively lead this functional transition and which are left behind competing for an increasingly scarce and costly pool of wild resources.
