Since the beginning of the year, the total Russian fish catch has amounted to more than 2.5 million tons

Russian fishing fleets record a steady increase in aquatic bioresource catches, driven by the performance of the Far East and a strong influx of youth labor during the summer season.

According to the industry monitoring system of the Federal Agency for Fisheries (ISFRE), as of July 13, Russian fishermen caught 2,557.2 thousand tons of aquatic bioresources. The performance and yield of each fishing basin are detailed independently below:

Far Eastern basin

The region consolidated a total catch of 2,013.9 thousand tons, representing an increase of 29.5 thousand tons compared to the level recorded in 2025. The breakdown by key commercial species shows the dominance of Alaska pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) with 1,324.6 thousand tons. Meanwhile, Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) reached 78.1 thousand tons (an increase of 0.1 thousand tons compared to 2025); Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) totaled 366.9 thousand tons (an increase of 80.4 thousand tons compared to the previous year); and Far Eastern flounder (Pleuronectidae) registered 38.8 thousand tons.

Sakhalin Region enterprises showed particular dynamism. During the first half of the year, fishermen from this jurisdiction harvested 505,000 tons of fish and seafood—98,500 tons more than in the same period in 2025.

"Sakhalin Oblast remains one of the key fishing regions of the Far East and the country," noted Fisheries Minister Ivan Radchenko.

In the Alaska pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) segment, local companies harvested approximately 283,000 tons in the first half of the year, which is 22,000 tons more than in the same period of 2025, according to information provided by the department to Fishnews.

The most significant increase occurred in herring (Clupea spp.). In the first six months, island users harvested 121,000 tons of this fish—52,000 tons more than in January-June last year. The region is developing its Sakhalin-Hokkaido herring fishery, a resource that has shown significant potential in recent years.

"It's very important that we were able to work with scientists and fishermen to establish a herring harvesting system," commented Ivan Radchenko.

Within the operational framework of this basin, more than five thousand young people joined the fishing brigades this summer, coming from 67 regions of the country. A total of 43 enterprises in the Far Eastern Federal District served as training grounds for their first industrial experience. Students handle the unloading of raw materials, cutting, cleaning, and work in fish filleting shops, salmon caviar processing shops, and frozen finished products, receiving competitive salaries. This year, the national student fishing projects "Kamchatka 2026" in the village of Oktyabrsky (with over 175 students from 11 regions) and "Power of the East" in the Sobolevsky District (with over 150 students from 11 other regions) stand out.

Northern basin

Production in this area reached 201.5 thousand tons, representing an increase of 0.5 thousand tons compared to the 2025 level. Among the most commercial species in the North Atlantic, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) stands out with 94.5 thousand tons, and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) registered 45.2 thousand tons, reflecting a notable growth of 10.5 thousand tons compared to the previous period.

Western basin

The total volume caught in this basin stood at 48.3 thousand tons. European sprat (Sprattus sprattus) led the catches with 33.4 thousand tons, achieving an advance of 3.7 thousand tons compared to the 2025 level. Meanwhile, Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras) contributed 11.2 thousand tons to the region's total.

Azov-Black Sea basin

This basin reported a total catch of 19.9 thousand tons. The species with the highest representation in the fishing operations of the area was the European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), with a volume of 12.4 thousand tons.

Volga-Caspian basin

Catches in this region totaled 39.0 thousand tons. Within this sector, Caspian sprat (Sprattus sprattus) contributed 14 thousand tons, while ordinary or inland fish species totaled 9.7 thousand tons, showing an increase of 0.3 thousand tons compared to 2025 records.

International waters and foreign zones

Outside its immediate jurisdictional waters, the fishing fleet of the Russian Federation obtained a yield of 223,340 thousand tons operating in the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of foreign states, conventional areas, and the open part of the World Ocean.
