Hake leads monthly declines in Brazil with a 5.26% drop, while the main species in national fish farming shows price decreases in all producing regions monitored by Cepea.

The IPCA (Brazilian Consumer Price Index) for June 2026 registered a deflation of 0.57% in fish and seafood prices, mirroring the overall decline in the Food and Beverages group, which fell by 0.24%. Year-to-date, the category shows an increase of 3.08% and 1.86% over the last 12 months.

The National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), for June 2026 registered an overall variation of 0.16%, driven by the slowdown in the Food and Beverages group. In line with this trend of easing food prices at home, the fish and seafood segment showed deflation of 0.57% in the month.

Despite the monthly decline, the category consolidates a cumulative increase of 3.08% for the year and an advance of 1.86% in the last 12 months.

Temporary price retraction and market behavior

The 0.57% drop in June reverses previous inflationary pressures and was driven by significant declines in high-volume species. Hake (Merluccius spp.) led the monthly declines with a substantial deflation of 5.26%, followed by peroá fish (Balistes capriscus) at -3.69%, anchovy (Pomatomus saltatrix) at -1.91%, salmon (Salmo salar) at -1.54%, and shrimp at -1.29%.

In the case of salmon and shrimp, the cumulative variations over 12 months remain moderate, at 1.02% and 2.67%, respectively.

Meanwhile, tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), the main species in national fish farming, also operated in positive territory in the annual indicator, accumulating a 5.83% increase for the year.

Tilapia prices fall by up to 0.44% in the main producing regions

A survey by Cepea (Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics) shows a drop in prices in all monitored regions between July 6th and 10th.

Tilapia prices showed a slight decline in the main producing regions monitored by Cepea during the week of July 6-10.

The highest price was recorded in Northern Paraná, where the price per kilogram of fish was R$ 10.37 (approximately US$ 1.91), a decrease of 0.30% compared to the previous week. This was followed by the Triângulo Mineiro/Alto Paranaíba region, at R$ 10.09/kg (US$ 1.86/kg), representing a decline of 0.44%, and the Grandes Lagos region, at R$ 9.85/kg (US$ 1.81/kg), with a decrease of 0.32%.

In Morada Nova de Minas, the price was R$ 9.50/kg (US$ 1.75/kg), with a negative variation of 0.04%, the smallest drop among the regions surveyed.

Meanwhile, Western Paraná recorded the lowest price in the survey, with tilapia being sold at R$ 8.71/kg (US$ 1.60/kg), a decrease of 0.28% compared to the previous week. According to data from Cepea, all monitored regions showed a decrease in value during the period.
