Shellfish aquaculture sector reports million-pound losses and severe bureaucratic barriers a decade after the UK's departure from the European Union

The Brexit has turned out to be a "disaster" and a "catastrophe" for the seafood industry, according to shellfish aquaculture and fisheries operators in the county of Essex, United Kingdom.

In an interview granted to local reporter Matthew Critchell from the British outlet EssexLive, the seafood business owner Tom Haward (pictured on the right), 44, director of the prestigious firm Richard Haward’s Oysters, explained that his company has suffered losses of around £200,000 annually (approximately US$256,000) since the United Kingdom left the European Union. This historic family-run company based in Essex, dedicated to the harvesting and cultivation of native flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) and Pacific oysters (Magallana gigas), has operated in the area for eight consecutive generations.

This critical situation for seafood producers is analyzed in the context of the tenth anniversary of the Brexit referendum, originally held on June 23, 2016, in which 51.89% of the British population voted to leave the European bloc. Tom Haward, who also commercializes his seafood products at London's renowned Borough Market, produces about one million oysters per year on Mersea Island, located on the north coast of Essex.

The seafood entrepreneur had previously expressed his fears to EssexLive that the British oyster industry would grind to a halt due to the new trade barriers.

"We had big customers in Europe. When Brexit was implemented, all our trade to Europe stopped overnight. I spent a lot of time finding customers in the UK to bridge the gap. It is still too complicated, difficult, and risky to export and trade with Europe, as I am exporting a live animal which is highly perishable."

"I have been in touch with some European customers and they are still too nervous about buying because it is just not simple and easy enough to do. The Europeans love British oysters. I hate Brexit."

The Essex producer insisted in his declarations to the EssexLive journalist that leaving the European bloc "has caused so much damage and continues to do so for small businesses," emphasizing that "so many small businesses have been drastically and harmfully impacted" and concluding that the measure "has been really damaging to the UK."
