The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources of Oman finalizes a strategic plan providing fixed docks and shelters to the most isolated coastal fishing communities in the governorate

MUSANDAM – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) of the Sultanate of Oman has officially announced the completion of an ambitious project for the rehabilitation and development of fisheries infrastructure in the Musandam Governorate. This strategic initiative is centrally aimed at modernizing landing capabilities, securing the value chain of fish and seafood products, and improving the working conditions of local artisanal fishing communities.

The Musandam region, characterized by its rugged geography of coastal fjords (khors) and coves, is home to hundreds of traditional fishermen operating in areas geographically isolated from major urban centers. The civil works project was designed to address historical logistical deficiencies and drastically reduce post-harvest losses by facilitating an agile and safe transfer of marine products to refrigerated collection and distribution centers.

Infrastructure deployment and regional coverage

The civil works executed by the ministry included the design and installation of 12 fixed docks for berthing and the construction of 11 coastal shelters equipped with roofed canopies. These structures are intended to protect boats, outboard motors, and fishing gear from severe weather conditions and intense solar radiation in the area.

The technical distribution of the infrastructure is formally broken down as follows among the different administrative divisions (wilayats):

  • Wilayat of Khasab: The installation of 5 fixed docks and 11 shelters and canopies was completed. The works directly benefit traditional fishermen in the localities of Nazifi, Sham, Sibi, Ghab Ali, Quba, Shisha, Shabus, Al Balad, Ghafoul, Al Bout, and Kumzar.

  • Wilayat of Dibba: 7 strategic fixed docks were deployed to serve the coastal communities of Haffa, Sanat, Shariyah Al Hilwah, Adas, Al Sadwin, Dini, and Aqaba.

  • Niabat of Lima: Complementary support infrastructure was integrated into the landing zones of the localities of Emis and Maiwi.

Socioeconomic impact and continuity of the plan

The Director General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in the Musandam Governorate, Dr. Ali bin Abdullah Al Alawi, emphasized the significance of traditional fishing as the main economic livelihood for families in this maritime enclave situated on the Strait of Hormuz. The official remarked that the port facilities represent a qualitative change in operational safety, particularly benefiting elderly fishermen and promoting the inclusion of women participating in local processing activities.

Furthermore, Khalifa bin Ali al Shehhi, Director of the Department of Fisheries Wealth of the governorate, ratified the government's commitment to consolidating a sustained increase in regional fisheries production volume by encouraging generational renewal in the sector. Likewise, the official confirmed that the institution has already formulated and submitted the technical proposal for the next phase of the development program, which will focus on providing complementary basic services and logistical supply networks to the marine settlements experiencing the highest index of geographical isolation in the governorate.
