Canary Islands Bluefin Tuna Campaign Records Notable Progress, Covering 77.5% of Quote Until May

The bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) fishing season in the Canary Islands has experienced a radical turnaround during the first half of 2026, managing to reverse the negative results of previous campaigns.
According to official data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, the artisanal fleet of the archipelago captured a total of 440 tons until 24:00 hours on May 31, the date on which the first regulatory phase established by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) concluded.
This figure represents 77.5% of the annual quota assigned for the current fiscal year, initially set at 538 tons and expanded to 568 tons following a transfer of 30 tons from the community level. Industry sources are contemplating the possibility of a new complementary transfer that would raise the final limit to 600 tons. The remaining volume available for the second period of the campaign, which runs from June 1 to December 31, stands at 128 tons.
Current records contrast significantly with the consolidated data for the year 2025, classified by the fishing sector as a loss-making and anomalous year due to changes in the migration routes of tuna schools. During the whole of the previous year, catches barely reached 123 tons, which meant the consumption of a meager 22% of the authorized fishing rights. Thus, the current remnant for the remainder of 2026 exceeds the total caught in the whole of the preceding season.

By fishing modalities, the 250 vessels that make up the fleet with exploitation rights divided the downloaded volume in a balanced manner. The minor arts segment recorded the discharge of 230 tons, while the baitboat tuna fleet registered a total of 210 tons.
In economic terms, the estimated value of production in first transaction reached a global total of 3.1 million euros during the reference period. This amount is broken down into 1.6 million euros for the minor arts sector and 1.5 million euros for baitboats. The weighted average price stood at 7 euros per kilo at origin. However, representatives of local guilds recall that this gross value does not equate to the final net profit of the producer, which is conditioned by logistics costs and marketing commissions derived from shipping approximately 95% of the product to the markets of the Iberian Peninsula.
It should be noted that for the 2026 campaign, the central administration modified the access criteria allowing the simultaneous activity of the entire authorized fleet since the start of the season on January 20, a measure designed to optimize the utilization of the quota and avoid underutilization scenarios like those reported in previous years.
